Indian missions in UAE prepare grand celebrations for India's 80th Independence Day

Indian diplomatic missions and the expatriate community across the UAE are preparing for extensive celebrations to mark India's 80th Independence Day on August 15, with both in-person ceremonies and digital campaigns engaging the nation's largest overseas diaspora.

The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai will host onsite celebrations beginning at 6:30am, with flag hoisting ceremonies scheduled for 7am at both locations. Ambassador Dr Deepak Mittal will unfurl the tricolour in Abu Dhabi, while Consul General Dr E. Vishnu Vardhan Reddy will lead the ceremony in Dubai.

India's independence from British colonial rule was formalised through the Indian Independence Act, passed by the British Parliament on July 18, 1947, and came into effect on August 15, 1947, ending nearly two centuries of colonial governance.

Global relay marks sunrise across time zones

A new initiative this year, Surya Path Tiranga, will create a symbolic global relay of flag hoisting ceremonies across Indian missions worldwide. The digital relay will trace the path of the rising sun from east to west, connecting diplomatic posts from Fiji to the United States in a coordinated worldwide showcase of the national flag.

Har Ghar Tiranga returns for fifth year

The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, running from August 9 to 17, encourages Indians to hoist the tricolour at their homes. First launched in 2022 under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative to commemorate 75 years of independence, the campaign saw remarkable participation in its inaugural year, with over 23 crore homes displaying the flag and 6 crore people uploading selfies to the official portal. By 2023, participation surged further, with over 10 crore selfies uploaded.

Following amendments to the Flag Code of India in July 2022, citizens may now keep the national flag hoisted at their residences both day and night, whereas previously display was restricted to hours between sunrise and sunset. The UAE's Indian community, numbering approximately 4.5 million and representing the country's largest expatriate group, has been invited to participate by hoisting flags at home and sharing photographs online at harghartiranga.com.

The Indian diaspora in the UAE has experienced substantial growth, nearly doubling from 2.2 million in the early 2010s to approximately 4.36-4.39 million today, making it the largest Indian community abroad.

150 years of Vande Mataram

This year's Independence Day celebrations carry additional significance as they coincide with the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, India's national song. The composition was first published on November 7, 1875, in the literary journal Bangadarshan, founded and edited by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, before appearing in his novel Anandamath in 1882.

The song gained national prominence when Rabindranath Tagore set it to music and performed it at the 1896 Indian National Congress session in Calcutta. During India's freedom struggle, Vande Mataram became a rallying cry for resistance, particularly during the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, when it was first deployed as a political slogan on August 7, 1905.

On January 24, 1950, the Constituent Assembly adopted the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram as India's National Song, with then-President Dr Rajendra Prasad declaring it should hold the same status as the National Anthem.

Patriotic cultural programmes will feature collective singing of Vande Mataram, with learning tutorials available on the harghartiranga website to encourage widespread participation.

Quiz and social media contests

The annual Bharat Ko Janiye quiz will test knowledge of India among non-resident Indians, persons of Indian origin, and foreign nationals. Participants will have three minutes and 30 seconds to answer 10 questions. The top scorer from the UAE will receive recognition from the Consulate General of India in Dubai on August 15, while the top five participants will be honoured during Independence Day ceremonies at the Embassy and Consulate.

Both missions have launched the #MyIndiaMyStory campaign, inviting expatriates to share memorable experiences of India through short video reels. In Dubai and the Northern Emirates, participants are asked to create 30-second reels and post them on Instagram, tagging @india_in_dubai with hashtags #MyIndiaMyStory, #IndiaInDubai and #IndependenceDay2026. The Embassy in Abu Dhabi is running a parallel initiative under #IndiaInUAE, requesting one-minute reels that capture what India means to participants, tagged @india_in_uae. Selected entries from both campaigns will be featured on the missions' official social media platforms.
