Sheikh Mansour reviews 100-bed floating hospital's advanced trauma care capabilities

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, conducted a comprehensive inspection of the UAE's floating hospital at Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi, examining its operational readiness and advanced medical capabilities designed to enhance the country's humanitarian response capacity in crisis situations.

The 100-bed facility is classified as a Level III Trauma Hospital, equipped to provide emergency resuscitation, surgery and stabilisation in disaster-affected areas. The classification enables the hospital to deliver critical care during the crucial first 72 hours following emergencies, when at least 85 percent of survivors requiring urgent medical attention are typically rescued.

During the inspection, Sheikh Mansour reviewed the hospital's comprehensive medical infrastructure, including 10 intensive care beds and 18 beds dedicated to accident and trauma cases. The facility houses modern operating theatres capable of performing emergency, general, orthopaedic and laparoscopic surgical procedures.

Advanced infrastructure for sustained operations

The Vice President examined the hospital's integrated smart infrastructure, which includes advanced systems for medical gas production and distribution, a freshwater purification plant, and a wastewater treatment facility. These self-sustaining systems enable the hospital to operate independently in remote locations, maintaining international healthcare standards without external support.

The tour encompassed the emergency department, diagnostic imaging unit, laboratories, outpatient clinics, pharmacy and inpatient wards. Sheikh Mansour was briefed on the hospital's equipment and technologies, which provide healthcare services comparable to modern land-based medical facilities.

Sheikh Mansour affirmed that under President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's leadership, the UAE continues strengthening its humanitarian approach by developing advanced capabilities that enhance rapid emergency response and deliver specialised medical care to affected communities worldwide.

The floating hospital represents a significant addition to the UAE's humanitarian infrastructure, part of the country's broader relief system. The UAE was ranked the third-largest donor of humanitarian aid globally in 2025, contributing $1.46 billion according to UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs data. The country has pledged $550 million to support the UN's 2026 Global Humanitarian Overview.

Expanding maritime medical capabilities

The new vessel joins the UAE's existing floating hospital in Al Arish, Egypt, which began operations on February 24, 2024. That facility has conducted more than 5,000 surgeries and treated over 21,000 patients. The Al Arish hospital is equipped with 100 beds for patients and an additional 100 beds for accompanying relatives, demonstrating the UAE's family-centered approach to humanitarian medical care.

As part of Operation Gallant Knight 3, which marked 1,000 days in August 2026, the UAE has provided more than $3.89 billion in aid. The country's medical facilities have treated more than 230,000 patients through field hospitals and affiliated medical centres, alongside the floating hospital operations and patient evacuation programmes.

The development of rapidly deployable maritime medical facilities reflects the UAE's strategic investment in emergency response capabilities. Located at Zayed Port, a facility established in 1968 and named after the UAE's Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the hospital benefits from the port's strategic position as a major maritime hub.

Sheikh Mansour emphasised that the floating hospital strengthens the UAE's commitment to harnessing advanced technologies and medical capabilities to support affected populations, save lives and reinforce humanitarian response efforts in line with the country's humanitarian mission of providing relief and alleviating suffering in crisis situations.
